Announcement of the International Columnist Competition

Dear Emma,

I wanted to contact you to urge you to submit an entry to a special columnist competition being offered by the Internationalist Magazine and Americans for Informed Democracy. As one of our talented AID organizers, you have shown time and again that you are passionate about global issues and are taking active steps to promote a positive U.S. role in the world. If you are interested in expressing your opinions through writing, now is the perfect opportunity to make your voice heard as a national columnist and to have your writing read by high-profile journalists!

AID and the Internationalist have joined together to issue this challenge: write your version of the State of the Union address in 2009, focusing on foreign policy... in 800 words or less. The competition winner will receive a yearlong columnist position with the Internationalist Magazine! The Internationalist will have a distribution of 150,000 during the winner’s tenure as a columnist.

This columnist competition is part of a broader effort, being spearheaded by the U.S. in the World Initiative, to build a long-term vision for a responsible and effective U.S. global engagement. In the months ahead, U.S. in the World will involve hundreds of organizations and thousands of citizens in creating a Dream Presidential Speech on U.S. foreign policy. Your submissions to the columnist competition will help inform the Dream Presidential Speech. Participants are also encouraged to visit the U.S. in the World guide, which offers practical tips for talking about US foreign policy and global issues.

A broad array of guest judges will select the contest winner. These judges include:

Simon Cox – Reporter, The Economist

David Devlin-Foltz – Director, Global Interdependence Initiative, Aspen Institute

Marda Dunsky – Professor, Medill School of Journalism, Northwestern University

Mouafac Harb – News Director, Radio Sawa

Steve Kull – Director, Program on International Policy Attitudes

Priscilla Lewis – Director, U.S. in the World Initiative, New America Foundation

James Mann – Former Diplomatic Correspondent, Los Angeles Times

Andrew Nagorski – Senior Editor, Newsweek International

Richard Reeves – Syndicated Columnist and Best-selling Author

Also, we hope that you will pass information about this contest onto other students at Institute for Quranic Studies. I have attached a relevant announcement below, which you can pass on to your university’s AID email list or to other student clubs and organizations. Interested students can visit http://www.aidemocracy.org/columnist.cfm for more information about the contest. Entries must be submitted online at http://partners4progress.org/writing_contest no later than midnight on Friday, August 25th. The contest is open to college students only. The Columnist Competition finalists and winner will be notified no later than Friday, September 29th.

Please feel free to contact me at allynn@aidemocracy.org or call (203) 773 1202 with any questions. We look forward to receiving your entry!
